Adding AI chat to a Wix site takes one snippet in Settings, Custom Code, set to load on all pages. There is no app to install and no Velo code to write, because the assistant reads your published pages rather than connecting to Wix itself.
One requirement before you start: custom code needs a premium Wix plan with a connected domain. On the free plan the panel does not exist, so there is nowhere to paste anything.
The three steps
- Add your site address and let the assistant read it. It crawls the pages a visitor sees, so your services, pricing, about and contact pages all come in, along with blog posts and any store products.
- Check what it read, and upload anything that never made it onto a page. Price lists and terms often live in a PDF somebody emails out.
- Paste the snippet into Settings, Custom Code, Add Custom Code. Apply it to all pages and place it at the body end rather than the head, so it loads after your site and never delays it.
Why not a Wix app
The Wix App Market has chat widgets, and they install with fewer clicks. Two things are worth weighing against that.
An app is tied to Wix. If you move to Squarespace, Webflow or your own build in two years, the app and everything it learned stays behind. A snippet moves with you, and so does the knowledge base behind it.
Apps also add load. Most inject more than they need, and Wix sites are already heavier than a hand-built page. One asynchronous snippet is the lighter option.
What it actually answers on a small business site
Most Wix sites belong to service businesses, and the questions arriving on them are boringly consistent: what does it cost, when are you open, do you cover my area, how do I book, what should I bring.
Those are all on the site somewhere, usually two clicks deeper than the person is willing to go. The assistant answers them from your own pages and links the page it used, so a visitor can check it and you can see why it said what it said.
The one that matters most is the evening enquiry. People look for a local business after work, message two or three, and go with whoever replies first. Answering at nine at night without staffing nine at night is the whole return on this for a small team.
When it should stop and fetch you
A service business runs on judgement calls: can you fit me in on Saturday, can you do it cheaper for two, will this work for my situation. Those should reach a person, and the assistant should say so rather than guessing at a quote you then have to honour.
Set it to take the enquiry with contact details and the full conversation attached, so your call back is a confirmation rather than an interview. More on local services.
FAQ
Answers, before you ask.
Do I need Velo to add AI chat to Wix?
No. One snippet in Settings, Custom Code, applied to all pages. Velo is only needed if you want the assistant to interact with page elements, which most sites do not.
Does it work on Wix Studio too?
Yes. Both have a custom code panel in site settings and the snippet is identical, because it loads in the browser rather than depending on how the site was built.
Do I need a paid Wix plan?
Yes. Custom code requires a premium plan with a connected domain. The free plan has no custom code panel.
Will it slow my Wix site down?
Not if you place it at the body end. It loads after your page, so it does not block rendering.
